Life Group Expectations: How Members and Groups Build Healthy Community

Why These Guidelines Matter

Life Groups work best when everyone knows what they’re stepping into. These guidelines exist to create clarity—so there are no unspoken expectations, mixed assumptions, or confusion about how we show up for one another. They help set a shared foundation that allows the group to function in a healthy, Christ-centered way from the very beginning.

These guidelines are not rules meant to restrict people; they are shared commitments meant to protect the group. They create an environment where people feel safe to be honest, encouraged to grow spiritually, and supported through real life. When expectations are clear, trust grows—and when trust grows, relationships deepen.

For the group as a whole, these guidelines help everyone move in the same direction. They foster consistency, mutual responsibility, and care for one another, making it easier for the group to grow spiritually and relationally together. We recommend reviewing these guidelines during the first week of the group and revisiting them as needed throughout the season.

Life Group Shared Group Guidelines

(Commitments the group makes together)

Clear Purpose

Our group will stay focused on spiritual growth, discipleship, and living out God’s calling together—not just discussion, but transformation.

Group Attendance

Our group will encourage consistent attendance and honor one another by respecting the start and end times of each meeting.

Safe Environment

Our group will create a space where people feel safe to share honestly, are listened to without interruption, and are supported without judgment or pressure to “fix” things quickly.

Confidentiality

Our group will protect trust by keeping personal matters shared within the group private.

Spiritual Health

Our group will encourage healthy spiritual rhythms, balance, and openness to growth, helping one another pursue a life that honors God.

Welcome Newcomers

Our group will remain open and hospitable, intentionally welcoming new people and helping them feel included and valued.

Building Relationships

Our group will invest in meaningful relationships by getting to know one another, praying for one another, and doing life together beyond the meeting.

Life Group Member Guidelines

These guidelines describe what each individual member commits to for the good of the group.

Commit to the Purpose

I commit to engaging in this group with the goal of growing spiritually and living the life God has called me to live (John 10:10; Matthew 28:18–20).

Prioritize Attendance

I will make the group a priority by attending consistently and communicating ahead of time if I will be absent or late.

Participate Actively

I will engage in group discussions, listen well, and contribute honestly, knowing my presence and voice matter.

Practice Respectful Listening

I will listen without interrupting, respect differing perspectives, and avoid giving quick fixes or simple answers when others share.

Honor Confidentiality

I will keep personal matters shared in the group private and within the group.

Pursue Spiritual Growth

I will come open and prepared to learn, grow, and allow God to shape my life through Scripture, discussion, and prayer.

Engage in Prayer

I will participate in group prayer and pray for other members throughout the week.
